Here is a recent handyman project that I really enjoyed working on. I put some shelves in this space beside the fireplace. 
The shelves are made of plywood and I put a 1x2 on the front to finish the edge and to give the front edge extra rigidity. The shelves sit on strips on both sides and on the back. They are about 45 inches wide. Plywood would normally sag on the front with that kind of span but with the 1x2's they are very sturdy.
After she had the shelves The home owner decided she wanted some doors on the bottom. Since these would have to be custom ordered we decided it would be better if I just built them myself. So we discussed what she wanted: frosted glass windows, hidden hinges, and magnetic holds. She did not want any knobs on it so we put in a magnetic push/click type holder - you just push on the door and it clicks like a pen and pushes the door out enough to get hold of and open. when you close it you just push till it clicks and it stays closed.Same doors, different angle. She wanted to do the painting so I do not have a picture with the doors painted.
